A family trade takes root in Connecticut.
My grandmother had 17 children, and my dad was the youngest. They were an old farming family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The family joke was that whenever my grandparents needed more help on the farm, they simply had another baby.
My Uncle Earl was the oldest. He moved to Connecticut and founded Welch Roofing in 1948. As his brothers and sisters grew older, they came down during the summers and learned the trade.
One of Earl's best protégés was my Uncle Bernie, who later carried the company forward with his children, Scott and Jeanette.
