Built on family. Forged through generations. Done right — no shortcuts.
Where It All Began
My grandmother had 17 kids. My dad was the youngest.
They were an old farming family in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. And the running joke was — anytime they needed more help on the farm… they’d just have another baby.
The oldest of those 17 was my Uncle Earl.
In 1948, he left the mountains and came to Connecticut with a simple goal — build something of his own. That year, he founded Welch Roofing.
It wasn’t a big company. It wasn’t flashy. It was built the old-fashioned way — hard work, long days, and doing right by people.
As his brothers and sisters got older, they’d come down during the summers and learn the trade from him. Roofing wasn’t something you studied — it was something you did.
One of his best protégés was my Uncle Bernie.
In the 1980s, when Earl was ready to retire, he passed the torch to Bernie. From there, Bernie, along with his son Scott and daughter Jeanette, carried Welch Roofing forward into the next generation.
Learning the Trade the Hard Way
I got my start as a teenager in the late ’70s, working summers on the roof.
Let’s just say… there were probably a few child labor laws being bent back then.
I learned fast — mostly because I had to.
Ask me about the time I ran up on a roof during a hurricane to re-nail a tarp that had blown loose. Technically, the storm was still a few hours away… but I’m pretty sure part of me is still missing from the chewing I got afterward.
At that age, I was convinced of one thing:
There was no way I was going into roofing.
A Different Path — And a Lasting Standard
So I joined the United States Army.
I spent four years there, and it changed how I approach everything.
I learned discipline. Accountability. And what it means to do a job right the first time.
During my service, I earned multiple recognitions, including the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct Medal — distinctions that reflect consistent performance, discipline, and trust.
But what stayed with me wasn’t the awards.
It was the standard.
You don’t cut corners.
You don’t make excuses.
And you take care of the people counting on you.
Back to Roofing — This Time for Good
After my service, I came back to Connecticut… and right back to roofing.
Over the years, I worked every role there is:
In 1994, I started Welch Enterprises Inc. with my father and brother, growing it into a $2–3 million company.
In 2000, I developed an estimating software program called ConTracker EZ and went on to train over 1,000 contractors across the country on how to estimate jobs on-site.
That’s actually how I first met Adam Quenneville — a contractor I immediately respected for being a straight shooter and doing things the right way.
Taking the Helm
In 2006, I purchased Welch Roofing — lock, stock, and barrel.
Overnight, I went from working with a team… to being a one-man band.
Sales, production, owner — everything.
And I took that responsibility seriously.
I’ve always believed if you’re going to do this work, you should know it inside and out. Not just how to install a roof — but how to install it right, according to manufacturer specifications, building codes, and best practices.
Over the years, I’ve earned certifications as a:
And under my leadership, Welch Roofing became a Select Shingle Roofer with CertainTeed — a credential earned by less than 2% of contractors nationwide.
A Better Way to Serve Homeowners
I loved the control of running everything myself.
But over time… I realized homeowners deserved more than a one-man operation.
In 2019, I reconnected with Adam, and after a “friendly” game of pool — where he completely wiped the table with me — he said something simple:
“Why don’t we just work together?”
Today, that’s exactly what we do.
What That Means for You
When you call Welch Roofing, you work directly with me.
